Broneviki were normally gondola-type railcars reinforced with wooden timbers, sandbags and iron plating. Bristling with machine guns and howitzers, it was a formidable moving fortress. In later versions circular steel gun turrets were added. A flatcar loaded with rails was set ahead of the armored freight cars. Behind was the locomotive and in the rear were the boxcars for the crew.
The spearhead of any attack was the bronevik. It was pushed as far forward as possible with reconnaissance carried out ahead of it. A reasonable distance behind came the troops of the main body. Once contact with the enemy was made, the troops detrained and pushed ahead under the cover of the bronevik's fire.
